Security changes that affect how administrators work across domains

As part of a security update released on September 24, 2026, some tasks now require specified paths when administrators work across domains.

Administrator permissions haven't changed, but administrator privileges are restricted when logging into other domains to prevent malicious users from hacking sessions and obtaining elevated privileges. These restrictions are intended to improve your security and the security of your users, not prevent you from performing your administrative tasks.

Administrators can work across domains in two ways:

  • Sign into your home domain to manage domains, users, courses, enrollments, and perform administrative functions as you typically do. Your home domain is the domain your user account is located in.
  • Use Open domain when signed into your home domain when you need to view how domain-specific settings are applied to another domain.

What is my home domain? To confirm that your user is located in a domain, open the domain and find your user in the Users tool. If you have previously used userspace/username to sign into other domains, userspace is your home domain.

Which method should I use?

If you want to… Use
Manage domains, users, courses or enrollments Your home domain
Proxy as another user Your home domain
Change your own password, multi-factor authentication or profile Your home domain
See Buzz the way another domain's users see it, with its settings and metadata Open domain

Using Open domain

Open domain opens another domain in a separate browser tab, so you retain your home domain session. The tool is found on the User menu of the admin app or in the Admin app QuickNav tool when you search for a domain.

To protect your administrator credentials, some features are restricted, unavailable, or disallowed when using Open domain in another domain.

Alternatives to Open domain

For testing purposes, there are other ways to access another domain and see its settings:

  • Use a test user: Create a user in the other domain for testing purposes.
  • Proxy: Proxy as another user to access the other domain. When proxying, you have access and permissions to everything that user has, so it's important to use this feature responsibly.

For managing other domains or their users, courses, and enrollments, sign into your home domain and navigate to the other domain. You can reach domains your permissions cover, and Buzz applies your home domain's settings wherever you go.

Getting to another domain

  • QuickNav tool. Search for the domain from the toolbar in the Admin app.
  • Domain menu. Navigate domains and subdomains from the main menu.
  • Parent domain. Walk up from Domain details with the parent domain button.
