How do I create Learner journeys in Dawn?

Learner journey sections allow learners to choose which activities to complete and how they demonstrate mastery within a section of a course.

Authors can organize multiple learning activities and assessments within a journey, while Dawn tracks completion and mastery based on the assessments learners complete.

Mark a section as a Learner journey

  1. Open your course in the Editor.
  2. Open the Table of contents and select the section you want to edit.
  3. Enable the Learner journey option for that section.

Once enabled, the section can contain both learning activities and assessments.

Add learning activities and assessments

  1. Add instruction items to the section as you normally would.
  2. Identify the items that should measure learner understanding.
  3. Mark or drag those items to be Assessments within the section.

All other instruction items function as Learning activities that help prepare learners for the assessment.

Configure Mastery awards

Dawn uses Mastery awards to track learner progress and completion across courses. You can assign Mastery award values to any instruction item in a section.

For journey sections, only Mastery awards on assessments contribute to the section's mastery progress, meaning that Mastery awards on learning activities are ignored for roll-up calculations.

  • If a learner completes multiple assessments, the assessment with the highest Mastery percentage determines the mastery awarded for the journey.
  • If no assessment is completed, the assessment with the highest possible Mastery percentage value is used when calculating the courses total possible mastery.

What learners see

For learners:

  • The journey appears as one item in the course table of contents.
  • Opening the section shows a section home page with the available activities.
  • Learners choose which learning activities to complete before attempting an assessment.

Navigation works as follows:

  • Continue from the section home page moves to the next section.
  • Continue from a learning activity or assessment returns to the section home page.

The journey is considered complete when the learner completes at least one learning activity and one assessment.
