Questionnaires allow authors to create a series of questions in one Instruction item. You can then review individual learner responses as well as the merged results of all respondents.
To create a questionnaire:
- Open the desired Catalog entry and Section from Administration > Catalog.
- Click Add instruction and choose Questionnaire.
- Give your questionnaire a Title.
- Provide the Expected duration for the Interaction to inform Effort data.
- Check the Notify coach to review box if you want coaches to immediately know when a learner has completed the questionnaire (when checked, learners don't receive Mastery award until the coach review is complete).
- Click Add question and choose the type you want (Likert, Choice, or Free response).
Question types
You can create Likert scale, Choice, Free response: Short answer, and Free response: Essay questions for your questionnaire.
Likert scale questions
Likert scale questions ask learners to choose a rating from a linear, numbered scale (e.g., "On a scale of 1-5, how strongly to do agree or disagree with X?").
To create Likert scale questions:
- Provide the Title and Mastery award.
- Provide instructions on how to answer the question(s) if needed.
- Review and edit the Likert scale Labels if needed. By default, Dawn provides one of the most commonly used scales: numbers 1-5, where 1 = Strongly disagree and 5 = Strongly agree. You can add and subtract labels as well as change them.
- On the Questions card, provide the questions or statements that learners are asked to respond to. You can Add questions here, but remember that they are all going to answered by learners using the same scale.
Likert scale questions are presented with the questions in rows and the answer options as columns of radio buttons.
Choice questions
To create a Choice question:
- Provide the Title and Mastery award.
- Include the question and any other information learners need in the Body.
- Provide answer options in the Choices fields. You can easily add or delete questions.
Choice questions are displayed with radio buttons, and learners can choose only one.
Free response: Short answer
To create a Free response: Short answer question:
- Provide the Title and Mastery award.
- Include the question and any other information learners need in the Body.
- Select Short answer in the Response type dropdown.
Learners are able to provide their answer on a single line. If you believe learners will need more space, create a Free response: Essay question.
Free response: Essay
To create a Free response: Essay question:
- Provide the Title and Mastery award.
- Include the question and any other information learners need in the Body.
- Select Essay in the Response type dropdown.
Learners are able to provide their answer in a field that extends as they add content.
Review questionnaire results
Review individual responses
Access each learner's questionnaire responses in Administration > Learners screen by selecting the learner, catalog entry, and questionnaire. Coaches can also submit reviews for questionnaires.
Review overall questionnaire results
Dawn automatically roles up all questionnaire responses and merges them to generate charts and graphs for quick analysis.
You can access them in the Administration > Catalog > Enrollments screen. Depending on the type of question, you can find bar graphs, donut (pie) charts, and word clouds.
With all Learner response overviews, you can:
- Filter response results by Group.
- Filter response results by the Instruction and Interaction the responses are from.
- Toggle between two views:
- Summary is the default and it displays all learner responses in charts and graphs.
- Detail displays each response as a row in a sortable and downloadable table.
- Download and print the results.
Bar graphs (Likert scale questions)
Likert scale question results are displayed in stacked bar graphs showing the percentages of learners that chose each response.
Donut (pie) charts (Choice questions)
Choice question results are displayed in donut (pie) charts showing the percentage with which each choice was selected. Only text appears in the legend of this chart (no images or rich text elements).
Word clouds (Essay and short answer questions)
Word clouds are generated for Free response: Essay and Free response: Short answer questions.
Word clouds are images created using the words in selected text; the size of each word in the image is determined by the frequency with which it appears in the text. By generating a word cloud using all of your respondents' answers to the same question, you get an "at-a-glance" way of seeing which ideas are most commonly coming up.
