How do I use the Performance/Gradebook tool?

During the summer of 2017, we released a new Buzz UI, giving you the same features and functionality with a cleaner, simpler user experience!

Until all users have switched to the new UI, our Help Center articles will include information for both. 

Click the header below that aligns with the Buzz UI version you are using (Old UI or New UI); if you don't know which version you are using, review the differences and/or contact your system admin or Agilix account manager.

Old UI

Record and track all student performance in one place.

Performance screens

Navigate to the Performance tool with the Main Menu. This tool includes four main screens:

  • Gradebook provides a table view of students (rows), activities (columns), and each student's score on each graded activity in the intersecting cells. You can:
    • Click Options in the toolbar to choose the columns and other display details you want on the screen.
    • Click a student to see and/or print their individual gradebook information.
    • Click an assignment to open the Activity Grader for that assignment.
    • Click a specific cell to open the Grade Editor for a particular student activity.
    • Click Enable Quick Edit in the toolbar to enter scores directly into the Gradebook table.
    • Use the toolbar buttons to Import Scores, Export Scores, and manage Final Grades.
  • Mastery lets you review the class' objective mastery. Here, you see each objective that is linked to one or more course activity listed along with an indication of how well the class, as a whole, seems to be mastering it.
    • Note: This tab does not appear if you have not defined objectives for the course. Contact your system admin if you should have access to this tab, but it doesn't appear. 
  • Unit Summary displays each student's progress in completing the activities in the course, as a whole, as well as their progress in each course unit (units are folders in the Editor). This reflects all activities, both those that are gradable and those that aren't.
  • For Me displays all personalized activities (choice activities, self-assigned tasks, and teacher-assigned Clipboard tasks and activities) for each student on the date it was assigned. Select the activities from the table to review and/or grade them.

Accessibility notes

Three inline help items appear on this screen that are not currently supported by screen readers:

  • Below the grading fields in the Grade Editor for Multi-Outcome Scoring courses: You can selectively excuse a student from any Scoring Objective by entering "X" instead of a number in the score box and then clicking Submit Score. To excuse a student from the entire activity, simply click Excuse.
  • Next to pending grades where they exist in the Gradebook: Pending scores represent activities that have been graded, but the score has not been returned to the student. Pending scores include:
    • Scores that have been saved and not submitted.
    • Scores that have been submitted, but the activity’s specified release date for the score has not passed.
  • Next to the version number (Version: [#]) in the Submit Answers window that you use to submit student answers from a printed assessment: The printed assessment has already been submitted if its version is not [#].

Manage Gradebook display Options

The Options button in the Performance toolbar allows you to manage all of the content available on the screen.

Edit Visible Columns

To choose which information you want displayed in the columns on the Gradebook screen, click Options > Edit Visible Columns. You can choose to show:

  • Student Name
  • Student Username
  • Student External ID
  • Time of student's Last Login
  • Student Email Address
  • Accommodations indicator flag
  • The student's Score as a percentage
  • The student's Points earned (where applicable)
  • The student's Letter grade
  • The number of Minutes the student spent in the course
  • The grade you've Reported as final
  • Gradable Completion (the progress completing gradable activities)
  • Overall Completion (the progress completing all activities)
  • Whether the student's grade Performance matches expectations
  • Whether the student's Pace matches expectations
  • Enrollment Status
  • Enrollment Start date
  • Enrollment End date

 

Manage Gradebook display Options

Edit Visible Footers

To choose which information you want displayed in the Gradebook footer, click Options > Edit Visible Columns. You can choose to show:

  • Missing scores
  • Low scores
  • Score Entry
  • Points
  • Grading Scale
  • Category
  • Period
  • Available Date (which appears as "Student Access Date" in the footer)
  • Due Date
  • Grade-Release Date (which appears as "Score Visibility Date" in the footer)

Remaining display options

The remaining display options include:

  • Edit Column Groups, which allows you to order the columns according to the Course Outline or by Category.
  • Edit Name Display
    • First Last
    • Last, First
    • First; Last
    • Short (first and last initial)
  • Edit Score Display, which allows you to see what the student sees or select Points, Percent (%), Letter Grade, and/or Minutes Spent.
  • Show Lesson Details
  • Show For Me
  • Show Non-Gradable Activities
  • Show Inactive Enrollments
  • Show Feedback Indicators

Tips

  • The appearance of [Pending Scores] anywhere on your Performance screens indicates that there are activities in the course that have been graded, but the score has not been returned to the student. Pending Scores are visible only to teachers, and they appear only when one of the following conditions are met:
    • Activity scores have been saved and not submitted.
    • Activity scores have been submitted, but the activity’s specified release date for the score has not passed.

When turning on options > Edit Visible Columns > and selecting pace it appears that this should be "Whether the student's Pace matches expectations".  My question is what are the expectations.  Is this the target due date for graded items?  Asking as I have students who have not submitted work and have many items with the target due date has passed, I am not seeing the symbols showing behind pace, but a green check.  Thank you for any insight or direction here.

Hello Michele,

The Pace pacelight is determined by the percentage of items that are past due. If there are more than 15% of the items in the course that are past due then the pacelight will be yellow and it will change to red when 30% of the activities in the course are past due.

Sorry to drudge this conversation up again, but there have been a few instances where what I have judged there to be far more than 15% of the assignments that are late, but the grade indicator doesn't change.  Additionally, it appears that it normally turns late when there are several consecutive assignments overdue, or at least that's what I've thought I have observed in the past.

Is there any recent update on how the formula works, or if there is something strange going on?

I would recommend reaching out to your authorized support contact to take a closer look at the behavior in your courses. There could be other things at play in your situation.

Hello,

I am working in a gradebook that was set to grade by points, however the overall grades are shown as F. It will show that a student has 92% in the class, but letter grade shows F. Is there a setting affecting the overall display?

Hello Cheree!

You may want to review the Grade Scale in the Course Settings to verify the thresholds for each possible grade. This process can be seen in the following document: How do I create and manage grade-scales
