How do I set a grace period to allow late submissions?

When an activity's Due date passes, students are no longer allowed to submit work, complete assessments, etc.

You can allow late submissions for activities in the Activity editor.

  1. In the Settings tab, go to Activity settings.
  2. Check the Due date box and provide a Due date and Time.
  3. Check the Allow late submissions box.
  4. Select a Late submission rule to specify for how long late submissions are allowed past the due date:
    • Always allow late submissions
    • Allow submissions with a grace period (days)
    • Allow submissions with a grace period (hours)
    • Allow submissions with a grace period (minutes)
  5. If you specified a type of grace period, enter the number of days, hours, or minutes you want to allow in the Grace period field. The value you enter is added to the Due date.

Student view

When the student opens the activity after the due date, but within the grace period:

  1. The Due date shifts to reflect the Grace period and includes an indicator that the submission is late.
  2. If you have either of the following Course settings set, they are reflected in the student's score:
    • Automatically assign the minimum activity score to past-due activities
    • Automatically mark past-due activities as missing
  3. The student can still submit work until the Grace period has passed.

If you select "Always allow late submissions" as the rule: When a student opens the activity, they see the original due date and the score is red, indicating that it is late, but are always allowed to submit the activity.
