Note: This article applies only to Range enrollment courses, and not to Continuous enrollment courses.
Buzz allows administrators to set up School years and Grading periods within them at the domain to help align grading practices across the courses within the domain.
- A School year can look different for different schools and districts, but, traditionally in the US, they begin in the fall and end in the spring and represent the curriculum a student gets during one grade-level of schooling. In Buzz, an administrator can define any date range they want to represent a School year.
- A Grading period in Buzz is a range of time within a defined School year for which students can be given an overall grade. Many districts divide their School years into four quarters, and students receive a grade for each of those quarters. In Buzz, each of those quarters would be defined as a Grading period.
As teachers create gradable activities in a course, they can assign them to a specific Grading period, so those grades will be included in that period.
While courses that are created after your admins have defined domain-level Grading Periods will automatically default to use those Grading Periods, courses that were created before that (including copies made from those courses) must be manually mapped to the domain Grading Periods. By doing this, you transfer all of the activities and data associated with the existing Grading Periods to the new domain-level Grading Periods.
To manually update Grading Periods:
- Open the Editor tool.
- Select Course settings from Tools in the toolbar.
- Make sure to select the correct School year on the course details card (this should be selected by default).
- Make sure the Use grading periods box on the Grading periods card is checked.
- Checking the Inherit activity grading period from top-most folder means that you can assign a folder to a Grading period and all of the gradable activities in that folder are assigned to the same Grading period.
- Select the Grading Period you want to map to the new domain-level Grading Period.
- In the Grading period dropdown, choose the Grading Period you want to map to. If enabled by your administrator, you can define the Weight you want the Grading period to be given when the course's Final score is calculated. (Most of the time you want to make sure each Grading period's Weight is the same.)
- Click Done.
- After you update all of your Grading Periods so they are aligned one-to-one with the domain-level Grading Periods, click Save.
