Our teachers can award up to 10 extra-credit points for participation on discussion boards throughout the semester. I have instructed them to make the weekly discussion boards ungraded and to create an extra-credit assignment that awards the total extra credit. This has created a couple of questions.
How can I keep the discussion boards from showing up in needs grading?
How do we set up the settings to reflect bonus points?

Hi Natalie!
For the setup you described, you can handle the two pieces separately.
For the weekly discussion boards, setting them as non-gradable will keep them from appearing in the teacher's Needs Grading page. Since these discussions are being used to track participation rather than directly calculate a grade, this should work well for that part of the setup.
For the separate extra-credit assignment, you can place it in a course grading category configured with “All activities are extra credit.” This will cause the points awarded on that assignment to be treated as extra-credit points.
With this setup, the teacher can use the weekly discussions to determine how many participation points a student has earned, and then enter up to 10 points on the separate extra-credit assignment. Those points will be applied as extra credit through the grading category.
