What are Course cards?

Course cards appear on the Home page for you and your students, but they display different things.

What do Course cards display for teachers?

In the teacher app, Course cards show:

  1. A course title, term/dates, color, and image: These are all managed through the Editor (see instructions below).
  2. Tool shortcuts: The buttons along the bottom let you quickly jump to the Activity Player (Activities), the Gradebook, the People tool, and the Editor.
  3. The More menu: Expand this menu to quickly add or Edit course nickname (these only appear for you), Hide course, and Create a copy of the course.

What do Course cards display for students?

For students, Course Cards can display:

  1. A course title, term/dates, color, and image: These are all managed through the Editor (see instructions below).
  2. Students grade/score: The Course Card displays the student's grade. You can define in what form (letter grade, points, or percentage) the grade is displayed (see instructions below).
  3. Course progress: If a course is set up to display student progress, students see a progress bar that indicates how many of the gradable activities they have completed. To remove this, check the Hide student course-completion percentage box in the Editor > Settings > Gradebook > Options (see instructions below).

Manage Course Card title, term/dates, color, and image

To manage the the course title, term, color, and image that appears on a Course Card:

  1. Open the Editor tool.
  2. Select Course settings from Tools in the toolbar.
  1. Define the Title, Term, and Start and End dates.
  2. Upload a course image.
    • Recommended thumbnail file type: PNG or JPG (Buzz converts all files into PNGs)
    • Ideal thumbnail size: 400px x 400px (Buzz automatically resizes images, so uploading images smaller than 400px x 400px may reduce quality)
  3. Assign a course color using its hexadecimal number.
  4. Save.

Manage Course Card grade display

To manage the way grades are displayed on a Course Card:

  1. Open the Editor tool.
  2. Select Course settings from Tools in the toolbar.
  1. Check the box(es) next to the preferred display(s) under Course grade view in the Gradebook options card. If you choose multiple formats, the Course Card shows only one form; Letter grade takes priority, then Points, and then Percentage.

It would help to know what factor(s) determine(s) how the course cards are arranged. In the past, they were in alphabetical order according to the course title. Are there future plans to allow teachers/students to arrange the course cards how they'd like?

Hey Brooke, in today's release, courses in the Course Chooser and Course Cards are listed in alphabetical order according to the course title. We needed to update it in a way that could be easily understood by our users. Thanks for your feedback and input.

Check out today's release notes.

How do I rearrange the course cards? What if I don't want them in alphabetical order?

Hey Kelly, currently students can rearrange the order of their Course Cards, but not teachers.

Will teachers ever have this ability???  It would really help us organize our courses.

Hello Ms. Dean!

While this behavior (teacher course card arrangement) is not currently part of the Buzz system, it does not mean that it won't be added at any point in the future to the Buzz UI. I think that's a great idea and we welcome your feedback for helping to make Buzz a better experience for users!
