Dawn emphasizes mastery-based learning!
When building a catalog entry, authors can create Mastery awards that are used to track learner progress. In the Mastery screen for each entry, you can set the percentage of Mastery awards required to complete it. Dawn also tracks the Effort a learner puts into an entry in the form of Time spent.
Mastery awards
Authors can set a Mastery award value on all instruction types and interactions, and the percentage of Mastery progress a learner is granted upon earning a Mastery award is determined by the value of each as compared to the value of others in the catalog entry.
The default value for new content is 0, meaning the content is not required for mastery or certification.
Mastery awards for Learner journeys
In Learner journey sections, only Mastery awards on assessments contribute to the section's mastery progress, meaning that Mastery awards on learning activities are ignored for roll-up calculations.
- If a learner completes multiple assessments, the assessment with the highest Mastery percentage determines the mastery awarded for the journey.
- If no assessment is completed, the assessment with the highest possible Mastery percentage value is used when calculating the courses total possible mastery.
Mastery awards for branching Video stories
In branching Video stories, Mastery awards can be set for the entire story. As you add interactions and scenes, you can assign Mastery awards to them. The running total of all possible Mastery awards are tracked at the Video story.
Effort (Time spent)
Effort is measured as Time spent completing videos and instructions. Expected time spent on videos and other in-Dawn instructions are automatically calculated. For instruction types that happen outside of Dawn, like Projects, authors can specify the expected amount of time the activity should take a learner and prompt them to enter the actual time spent.
Course completion Mastery
In the Mastery section of the course editor, authors specify the percentage of Mastery award points learners are required to earn for course completion.
Course completion progress is shown to learners as a percentage with 100% indicating full completion. If you choose 85% as the required number of Mastery award points need to complete the course, learners will see 100% course completion once they've earned 85% of the possible Mastery award.
You can choose to Issue a certificate at course completion.
Tracking and reporting
Mastery and Effort (Time spent) are tracked and displayed to learners and coaches to reward and reinforce learning.
Administrators and coaches can access and download individual or aggregated progress reports from the Learners screen, so they can analyze results and make changes where necessary.
Learners can see their Mastery progress and Time spent data on their dashboard and in an entry's home screen.
How is Time spent tracked in Dawn?
- For videos and YouTube: Dawn tracks the time that the video is actually playing. If the learner pauses, or an interaction pops up, the video time tracking pauses.
- For Projects: Learners self report the time they spend on a project.
- For other interactions (discussion, note and choice): Dawn tracks the time spent looking at an interaction with a maximum cap of 15 minutes per interaction.
