At some point in the past couple of years, our team noticed that we lost the ability to leave feedback at the question level for essay questions on exams. Is there a way to turn this on we might be missing, or is this feature gone for good?

Good afternoon Larissa,
This looks like you are altering the settings on the questions on the exams to include automatic feedback, but I was speaking as a teacher leaving feedback on a student's submitted exam. We used to have a button that said "Leave feedback" below each essay question on an exam, and it would pop up a box for teacher's to type question-level feedback. (They would still also have the overall teacher feedback box for the entire assessment.) The staff informs me they think we no longer saw this feature in Buzz sometime in 2024. I am including a photo from some old training materials.
Hi Larissa,
The current behavior is that feedback will be issued through the Messages window of the grade editor to keep it organized for the teacher and student. This is particularly useful when using BusyBee's Grading Assistant.
So, just to confirm, there is only the Messages window for the overall assessment for teacher's to leave feedback. There is no question-level box for feedback on multiple essays within an assessment?
Sorry, I missed the red highlighted arrows from your screenshot. We do display the "Leave Feedback" button next to the essay question of the Grade Editor when there is a rubric associated to the question.
Thanks for your response. I've gone into several exams in our Buzz, and I've grabbed two screenshots. One question has a passage and a rubric essay question, and one just has a rubric essay question, but neither has a Leave Feedback button to leave feedback at the question-level. It does have the automatic feedback that is attached to the question, but no place for the teacher to leave feedback, beyond the Messages window that relates to the exam as a whole.
The set up that we used to have was seeing 1) Student's answer, 2) The automatic feedback attached to the question (exp. "Answers vary..."), and 3) then a box for question-level feedback. This was in ADDITION to the Teacher Feedback box (now Messages) that related to the assignment as a whole
I understand the feedback feature and the behavior you described. During my testing, the Leave Feedback button is displaying in the Grade Editor when a rubric is attached to the essay question.
To help us investigate what you’re seeing, could you please provide the User ID of a user experiencing the reported behavior, along with the Course ID and Activity ID? This will allow us to take a closer look at the specific setup.
Here is a teacher user, course, and item with an essay question, no Leave Feedback button. Thanks!

Course ID: 269047250

Awesome thank you!
The questions in your example are using question links that I traced to course ID 189918331. However the activity ID's associated to that course I was not able to locate to confirm if they have an rubric defined in the activity settings. From your screenshot of the Grade Editor, it looks like the question content contains the text "Rubric" as hyperlinked text, and may not be associated with a rubric defined in the activity settings.
In my example screenshot above in this thread, the rubric defined in the activity settings is represented by the area of the blue "test (100)" bar and below to the Leave Feedback button. I was not using question links in my testing.
I see. So this must have changed for us when our Curriculum team transitions from using the Buzz-based rubrics to the linked rubrics. If at all possible for a future enhancement, we would love to see the Leave Feedback button on all open-ended questions! But I appreciate you chasing down this answer for us.
To clarify, I have also confirmed that a rubric that is defined in the essay question of a linked question will cause the Leave Feedback button display in the Grade Editor. In your screenshot, it appears the question it is linked to doesn't have a rubric attached to the essay question.
