For a Discussion Activity, I want to have the gradebook show C (for complete) if they score 60% or higher and I (for incomplete) if lower. How do I set that up?

Hi Laura,

Just to clarify—are you wanting it to display similar to pass/fail, but instead show a “C” for Complete if the student scores 60% or higher, and an “I” for Incomplete if they score lower than that, for just a specific activity?

If so, you can set this up by creating a custom Percent type grade scale in the course settings and define it as C = 60% and above and I = anything lower.

Here’s a help center article with detailed steps on how to create this custom grade scale: How do I create and manage grade scales.

Once your grade scale is created, go to the Settings tab of the discussion activity, choose Letter Grade under Score Entry, and then select the grade scale you just set up under Grade Scale.

Please let me know if I misunderstood your request.

When I apply this setting, the score displays as a number. I need it to display C or I instead.

Details:

  • Master Course ID: 232024253

  • Activities that should use the C/I grading scale:

    • 6c011c5bf79f40069452414d07f3e680

    • f7338299381c43ec9414dec1d6ff1507

    • a275e3ee868f4cd29df7bdeafd3876e2

  • Child Courses where gradebook display can be seen:

    • 232025833

    • 232025836

    • 238647592

Is this an issue with the grading scale, grading category, gradebook settings or something else?

Hello Laura!

I see the letter grade in the Grade Editor. Would changing the Grading Categories to use a Letter in the course settings that the activity or activities are aligned to be a viable solution so you can see that occur when viewing the teacher gradebook?

Here are the settings now:

But the gradebook appears like this (instead of C (Complete) or I (Incomplete))

Good afternoon, Laura,

Thank you so much for your patience while I looked into this.

After further testing, I found that what you’re trying to do isn’t currently supported. That said, I’ll go ahead and submit it as an enhancement request for our team to review and consider for a future update!
