How do I set up Clever SIS sync for Buzz?

If your district manages rostering and sign-on through Clever, you can connect it directly to Buzz.

Once set up, Clever keeps your schools, classes, and enrollments current automatically. Your users also get single sign-on: students and teachers can launch straight into Buzz from their Clever Portal, with no separate password to remember or manage.

Clever sync must be enabled for your domain before you can connect

If you're interested in setting up Clever sync, or have questions about whether it's available for your domain, reach out to your account manager to get started.

In Buzz: Create a "District domain" for the sync

The Clever sync needs a parent "District domain" to sync into. This is where you will configure and manage the sync. We recommend this be a brand-new domain created specifically for the sync. Any users or courses already in a domain won't be picked up by the sync, so reusing one just means that existing content sits alongside the synced data rather than being included in it.

Everything else gets built underneath this District domain automatically: when the sync runs, it creates a new domain for each school you share through Clever, populated with that school's teachers, students, courses, and enrollments. Your district-level staff and administrators live on the District domain itself.

Make sure Clever is enabled for the District domain by Agilix.

In Clever: Add the Buzz app you want and share the desired data

Start the process in Clever:

  1. Find the right Buzz app in your Clever dashboard. Search for Agilix Buzz in Clever. If you use Buzz through an Agilix partner, look for the partner's app formatted like [Partner name] on Buzz.
  2. Request to use Buzz. Sending a request notifies Buzz or your partner that you want to sync using Clever.
  3. Set your sharing rules. This is where you filter what gets shared  typically by school, grade level, and/or subject. Staff are usually shared through a separate sharing rule from students and teachers, so don't skip that step if you want district and school staff accounts created in Buzz.
  4. Confirm and save. Once your sharing rules are set, Clever will share exactly what you've selected  nothing more. Only what's shared here shows up in Buzz.

In Buzz: Configure your sync

To configure the sync for the "District domain":

  1. Open the Actions menu on the Admin > Domain screen, and select SIS sync.
  1. On the SIS sync screen, click Edit settings.
  1. In SIS type, select Clever.
    • You cannot use both Clever and OneRoster syncs in the same domain.
  2. Provide the District ID for the district you want to sync. This ID is provided in Clever.
  1. On the General settings card:
  1. On the Enrollment settings card:
    • Choose which role in Buzz you want teachers to be given.
    • Choose which role in Buzz you want students to be given.
    • Use the dropdown to indicate which of the following you want to do with Un-shared enrollments (Un-shared enrollments are enrollments that were previously shared with and created in Buzz, but are no longer being shared):
      • Do nothing
      • Mark as inactive
      • Mark as withdrawn
      • Delete
    • To disable updates for expired enrollments that are no longer shared through the sync, select Do not update un-shared enrollments that are expired.
    • Check the box if you want to Ignore start and end dates from the SIS and use them from Buzz.
  1. On the Roles card, choose which role in Buzz you want "District administrators" and "School Tech Lead staff" to have in Buzz (Administrator recommended).
    • Users with "District staff" and "Portal only staff" roles in Clever get read access to administrator tools by default.
  1. On the Course settings card:
    • Check the boxes to automatically create different types of base courses in Buzz for each of the synced courses. Base courses  allow you to edit a course content and settings in one place and have those changes inherit down.
      • Create a base course for the district.
      • Create a base course for each school.
        • If you create a a base courses for each school, you can choose to Enroll teachers in the school base course to automatically connect them to it.
      • Create a base course for each teacher.
      • Create a teacher base course for each term in the uploaded file.
    • Use the dropdown to indicate whether you want to Delete or Do nothing with Un-shared courses (Un-shared courses are courses that were previously shared with and created in Buzz, but are no longer being shared).

Once a base course has been created by a sync, it can't be removed. Base courses can be added later.

  1. On the User settings card, use the dropdown to indicate what you want to do with Un-shared users on upload (Un-shared users are users that were previously shared with and created in Buzz, but are no longer being shared):
    • Do nothing
    • Mark as inactive
    • Delete
  2. Save the configuration.

In Buzz: Test and start your Clever SIS sync

When you click Save in the Edit sync settings screen, you are returned to the SIS sync screen where you can validate the configuration and initiate a sync.

  • Check the Validation-only mode box and click Start API sync to check for errors and report status messages without running an actual sync.
  • Uncheck the Validation-only mode box and click Start API sync to run an actual sync, creating school domains, users, courses, and enrollments.

Before initiating a sync, verify that you have correctly filtered your Clever data to share only what you want.

The Status tab shows the results of the sync.

Reach out to Agilix support to:

  • Have SSO configured for Clever.
  • Schedule a daily sync, providing the desired time and time zone for the sync.
