Hi! I am new to Buzz and still getting accustomed to how everything works. I have a question about grading late assignments. I have an assignment where I have clicked the setting that allows the student turn it in late. After the due date has past, I click "Mark All Unscored Assignments As Zero" so that all students who have not completed the assignment will receive a zero automatically. However, upon doing this, students receive a red zero that will no longer allow them to retry the assignment, which means I have to manually go in and hit "retry" on every single student who got a zero. This is cumbersome as I have hundreds of students who all work at different paces.
Is there a setting or trick that will allow me to assign zeros to students who haven't turned in the assignment by the due date, but still allows them to submit the assignment without individual input? Thanks for any help, tips, or suggestions!
Hey Josh, hope you are doing well! There are a couple of different ways to accomplish this. I would like to share with you what I consider the easiest way today and something new that is coming this Thursday.
In the Course Settings, there is an option to Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activities. When enabled, the students will receive a zero after the due date but are still allowed to submit the assignment as long as late submissions are allowed. A good thing about this option is that it is intelligent, meaning, that if the student's due date gets changed to the future the zero will be removed automatically. So, to your question "Is there a setting or trick that will allow me to assign zeros to students who haven't turned in the assignment by the due date, but still allows them to submit the assignment without individual input?", yes, there is.
A potential downside would be that this setting would apply to all activities with due dates in the course. But, in each case, it would honor the activities' late submission policy.
Also, in this Thursday's update we will be enhancing the Batch update scores tool in the Activity Grader. In the update, you will be able to manually (in bulk) assign a zero and allow the student a retry. Here is a screen shot of what it will look like.
Do you think either of these solutions will meet your needs?
