I recently just did a change at the admin level for all courses in my district which marks past-due work as auto-zero, but doesn't mark them "complete." However, I was told that making this change would allow a retry on these "soft" zeros. Is that not the case? How can I ensure that kids can automatically still submit the work once the zero goes in automatically? I looked in this discussion but didn't see my exact answer. new to buzz, so sorry if I have missed it somehow. Technically, it wouldn't be a "retry" if they have never submitted it in the first place, right? So they can still submit if they miss their deadline I think...help.
Thank you for your message, those are great questions. You're right in thinking that assigning a zero automatically for past-due work doesn't count as a retry. In Buzz, the "Automatically assign the minimum activity score to past-due activities" setting doesn't restrict students from submitting work when the sub setting to mark the activity complete isn't selected. It simply enters a zero in the gradebook once the due date passes.
I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions, please let me know!
This is super helpful. I do have another follow-up question. Now that I have set this up, students are earning "auto zeros" on their SEM 1 exam when they are way behind. Are students able to see anything on those assessments where they have a soft zero? Teachers are panicked. LOL If you want to point me to an article too, that would be helpful, but I appreciate your quick feedback here.
If it is a continuous course as you indicated by "soft zeros" the students should be able to access the assessments and submit until the end of their enrollment or they receive an updated score by the grader.
