We would like to switch our courses to make it so students receive an automatic 0 once an assignment is past due, however we want the student to be able to retry those assignments. Is there a way to make the assignments automatically receive a retry or do we have to allow retry manually to each one?
Hey Neal, if you enable the course setting Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activities and you have the activity set to allow late submissions, the student will be able to make a submission for the late activity. Note that they will only be able to submit once if the activity received a zero due to being past-due.
It is set individually for every activity. You could go to the Activity List tab and select multiple activities (or even quickly filter depending on how your course is set up. Then click bulk edit. From there you can apply allow late assignments to all of them at once.
If you enable the course setting Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activities, can the students access the assignment without the teacher having to mark the 'retry' option or does the teacher have to mark the assignment with the 'retry' first?
We used the automatic 0's since I posted this in Oct. The students can still do them without the teacher allowing a retry, however you will not see the retry arrow. You will just see the 0 without a submission date.
We want to allow teachers the capacity to allow retrys for individual students once the grace period has expired. This doesn't seem possible or am I missing something?
Jeffrey Hausman, when granting the retry, you will be prompted to change the due date for the student if it is already past due. If it is not past due, then you can manually change the due date for the student when granting the retry.
With Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activitiesset, and late work is allowed - You say students can still submit to assignment... does that include submitting multiple documents?

Is the Allow Late Submissions a course setting or do I have to do it for every graded assignment?

See How do I create individualized due dates?
Where do I find the options to "Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activities?" I am not finding it.
It is in the course settings menu. In your course, click on the wrench at the top.
Scroll down to the advanced options pane.
Thanks for the helps.
