0's vs. Missing in the Grade Book

Hello,

I'm hoping there are others out there that can help with our issue. We use Buzz to create custom courses and access through our student information system, School Pathways. When we use the Buzz grade book and enter a 0 for a missing assignment it marks that assignment as complete and transmits as complete to the student information system. As a result, the 0 shows up as completed work on our student work products for attendance even though no work was actually completed. This is forcing us to not put in 0s for missing work which means grades are not accurate. We can't get accurate grades without messing up our attendance reporting.

Is there a way to mark a missing assignment as 0 or missing so that it calculates the correct grade but does not mark the assignment as complete? We need the assignment to not show as complete when auto assigning 0s. It would be really helpful to have other grade marks besides numerical so we could get around the completion issue.

Any insight is appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello Erineberg!

Unfortunately when an item is graded it counts as a submission and thereby marks the item as complete.

One could enable the "Treat as zero in gradebook until this activity is scored" setting within the item grader. This produces a black zero on the item in the gradebook till the student has completed the item.
Black zero: The activity has a setting to be treated as a zero. This means that the student has not actually received a zero, but for the intent of score roll-up (i.e., total score), it is treated as zero. The student is able to change those scores by the work they perform and are graded on. It will reflect in the course grade if the student has not performed work in the item to change that grade.

There is also the option in the final grades page to mark all items with a zero that have not been scored.

Brian,

Is there a way to toggle the "treat as zero" on for a certain assignment a certain point throughout the grading period (for example if a student has skipped an item and moved on in the course work) or does this have to be turned on at the beginning of the course for all the students and all the assignments in the entire class the whole time until it is completed? It would be nice if we could use it only on certain items that students have skipped and moved passed and not all the time for all the assignments.

Ideally if used, it should be enabled before students start working in the course. The setting will apply for all students in the course that have access to the activity. It could be enabled at different points in the course, but it may create challenges with additional work for teachers and may cause confusion for students as their rolled up course grades will change from what they were used to.

It may be easier to use the option to flunk all unscored activities within the final grades page at the end of the course.
