Zero after Due Date (Red or Black?)

In the course options,. I have "Automatically assign zero scores to past-due activities."

I really like that the score will automatically put in after the due date, rather than me having to go through the editor to "Treat unscored as zero".

Is there a reason why the "0" from "Automatically assign" is a red zero, while "Treat unscored" is black zero. For both, the assignments remain in the students to do list and can turn them in as long as I accept the assignments after the due dates.

I have tried to differentiate between red and black zeros to better communicate to the students and parents, but the red zeros from "Automatically assign" don't fit into what I was thinking?

Can anyone help clarify?

Red zeros will show in the grade history for students, whereas the black zeros are placeholders and not actually assigning a grade to the student. In the case of red zeros on past due activities, it will allow them to submit based on the grace period rules, but it will show a 0 in their grade history. The red zero is an actually submitted score for the activity.

Treat unscored as zero (black zero) will not show in the score history for the student. It is a place holder as no score has been submitted.

Hi Scott, I have a follow up question. In the gradebook, 2 activities are set up the exact same way to treat unscored as zero with due dates a day apart. One shows as red while the other is black. Additionally, students aren't able to submit the assignment even though the late rule is set to Always allow late submission. Is this a help ticket issue?
