Voiding submissions without content

One of my students has submitted his work with just a letter in the text box just to get it off his "to do" list. I want to send it back as incomplete but can't find a way to do that. It keeps staying on my "to be graded" list. How do I void the submission so that it does not show he completed the work when he did not.

I don't think you can void a submission to put it back on his to-do list. You can just allow a retry and tell them to do it again. I suppose you could excuse the score, duplicate the assignment, and make it only visible to that student. You could reassign it through the clipboard, but I don't know that clipboard assignments appear on the to-do list.

To avoid this in the future, I suggest the following changes to your assignment settings:

* in the advanced activity options change the setting "mark as complete when the student" to "receives a passing score."

*in the advanced gradebook options enter a number for the passing score percent (I use 70 for assignments)

Now it won't come off of the student's to do list until they receive the minimum passing score.
