Averaging Progress into Weekly grades

I want to use all of my students' Progress as an additional weekly grade. My grading week goes from Friday to Friday. On Friday each student's grade has to reflect a cumulative increase of progress of at least 10%. This allows me to determine the "real" grade a student has earned, based not only on the grade Buzz provides, but also incorporates an overall increase in Progress of 10% per week, over a 12 week grading period. Often we have students that have a "B"/88% in week 8 of a 12 week grading period, but have only completed 30% of the course. This is not a reflection of the true grade a student has earned. In fact the student is in danger of failing or not completing their assigned course at the end of the grading period.

Good morning Patrick,

Buzz doesn’t have a built-in way to do exactly what you’re describing. However, here are two possible workarounds you could try:

Option 1: Manual Entry

  • Each Friday, export the Progress Report and calculate each student’s percent increase.

  • Create a “Weekly Progress” activity in the course and assign points based on the increase. You can decide whether or not this activity counts toward the final grade.

  • Students will see this activity in their gradebook.

  • To track progress:

    1. Run the Teacher Export Scores report and include the Gradable Completion column.

    2. Compare this week’s completion % to last week’s.

    3. If a student’s completion increased by ≥10%, award full credit in the “Weekly Progress” activity. Otherwise, adjust the score as needed.

Option 2: Course Design Workaround

  • Break the course into 12 weekly folders (aligned with grading weeks).

  • Design each folder so that students complete ~8–10% of the course per week.

  • This way, the weekly grade appears naturally in Buzz as students complete each folder’s work.

  • Pros: Once set up, it runs automatically—no weekly tracking required.

  • Cons: May require restructuring the course, which could be a significant change depending on your current setup.
