Whenever I create a fill in the blank question, and select display workspace, if a student answers incorrectly, it does not mark the question as incorrect, but requires I manually check each answer. It also does not assign partial credit even if it is selected. Is there a reason for this or am I doing something wrong? This also happens on multiple choice questions.
That makes sense. I just did not know if there was a way to have it still grade them. Like I created alternative responses and assigned them point values as well for partial credit, but even when the student types those values in, it still does not recognize it.
Even when it is set up like this ↓, and the student types 61, it still does not recognize it as correct and does not assign the 1 point.
Hmm, you would think that since you defined that answer as 1 point the server would assign it. Maybe that's something to put in a tech ticket or request as an enhancement.
Can I ask why you include a workspace if you don't need to see their work?
Well, the main issue is I allow two attempts, so for them to know their score and determine whether or not they want to retry it, I have to manually grade them which makes it much more difficult. I would prefer to have it mark it wrong, and then I be able to grade it at the end. That way, students aren't waiting on me at all hours of the day/night to grade their 1st attempt. I think it would be nice if there were more options or features to change settings between each attempt.
I guess my question was really why, if you are telling Buzz what partial credit to assign, do you need the workspace for that question at all? Are you looking for the server to assign some partial credit for certain answers, but you will manually assign partial for other answers as well? One more question. Is this an assessment type activity? I may have a work-around for you. I'll have to test it out though.
Here is a question from my algebra class. We used a workspace so we could assign different amounts of partial credit for different errors. You can see in the workspace this student correctly explained what they were doing, but mistakenly said 11+7 was 14 so I assigned 2 out of 3 points.
Right, that's what I want Buzz to do, but it's a multivariable problem, so if the student switched x and y, I want Buzz to recognize that and automatically just deduct 1/2 point or something. Here is a picture of the full problem. Their work in this case would be irrelevant because they solved correctly, but switched x and y. I realize that this is maybe not worth taking off points for or for going through all of this trouble, but I want them to be paying attention to the details, and reading carefully. This is a really simplistic example too. Sometimes I have 5 or more fill in the blanks (identifying segment lengths, angles, etc.). So it would be helpful if they solved correctly but switched x and y, for Buzz to recognize that and grade it still, acknowledging the swapped answers as correct, but deducting points accordingly.
I have similar question in my courses. Note that if the student puts 50 in both blanks (or 61 in both) it would give them 3 out of 4 points.
What you could do is write this as a Practice type activity instead of an assessment type. Then under the settings tab go to the Question-Group Settings pane and click on the default settings.
Change the number of attempts from unlimited to 2.
Now enter your questions. Notice under the interaction settings there is no option for workspace. You can actually get around this by going to the text editor and manually adding it. Type the line "Options: Workspace" as shown below.
When the students answer the question correctly, it will give them a green check. If they submit an incorrect answer they won't get a check or an X. Instead, it will be sent to you to grade the workspace like an assessment. The difference is that the student can see they didn't get the green check indicating a correct answer. They can redo that question immediately without waiting for you to grade their work. This will overwrite their first submission. After their second submission it will either be counted correct, or it will be sent to your to-do list to check their workspace for partial credit.
I tested the workspace and resubmission and it seems to work. I did not test the 2 submission limit. Note one other difference is that the students won't be retaking the entire assessment. They will only redo the questions they missed. Also, I tried your partial credit idea and it still wouldn't automatically assign partial credit. That is a great idea though and should be submitted as a feature request/enhancement.

I believe it is so if the student gets the question wrong, you can assign partial credit based on the work they show in the work-space.
That makes sense. I just did not know if there was a way to have it still grade them. Like I created alternative responses and assigned them point values as well for partial credit, but even when the student types those values in, it still does not recognize it.
