The design decision was to use the icons as if the device where the arrow was pointing to/from is the server for Buzz. The arrow is pointing for the flow of information in regards to Buzz, for example adding information into Buzz (import) has the arrow pointing into the server.
I understand this from a programming / Buzz employee standpoint. However it doesn't make sense from a User Experience / end-user standpoint. If you put yourself in the shoes of a teacher and approach it that way, these icon configurations are illogical.
