Hello. I am aware that under Course Settings where you can check a box -Students must complete each activity in order- But my question is if I can have this setting apply for only 1 student or a group that I created.? thank you

Hello David!

Course settings apply to all students. If you need to gate specific students for specific activities you will need to do so through the activity settings and the use of student groups.

Thank you for your reply.  I am still a bit unclear. If I want to gate specific students do I need to do that for each activity -one by one? Also, I am unsure of how to do that for a student groups. ie, If I made a group with 3 students and I want to 'gate' them- how do I 'gate' activities for the whole group?  thank you for your assistance

Hi David,

To change settings for a single group, open an activity in the editor. Click on the people icon in the upper right. This opens a drop-down menu where you can choose a particular group. Now you can change settings for the activity and save. The saved changes will only apply to the selected group. One way I use this, for example, is to set a different password for each class period for assessments.

As far as setting the gateway, I don't believe there is a way to bulk edit that. You would have to set each assignment individually. It may be enough, though, to set every other or every third activity. That might still keep the students on track while making less work for you.

Open an activity in the editor. Select your group as explained above. Scroll down to the visibility and access pane. Check the option to block access until student completes other activity. Now click choose activity to select the activity you want. Save. You aren't quite done yet. Scroll down and keep reading.

This is very important. Open the activity you chose above in the editor. Look at the advanced activity options pane. Where it say mark as complete when the student... the default setting says submits this activity. That means the student could submit it blank, or full of garbage and Buzz will count it complete just because it was submitted. That will allow the student access to your next activity. You will likely want to change this setting. I always set it to mark as complete when student receives a passing score. I also always go to the advanced gradebook settings pane and change the passing score to 70%. That way my students have to earn at least a C- before the activity is considered complete.

Note that you can also set gateways on folders. For example, I have each unit of my math class in a separate folder. I could set a gateway on the unit 6 folder to prevent access until the student received a passing grade on the unit 5 test.
