When I've looked at changing from the built in weighted categories to a points based, the point totals generated don't seem to have the same value as the weighted categories did. It'd be nice if switching from weighted to points based was a one-click switch. Points based grading is easier for students to understand how it affects their grade. It's also easier for them to predict how one assignment will affect their grade.
