Student notes (from Kelly Loving)

Is there any way in Buzz to keep a log of student behavior? For example, I sent a parent email today about a student and I would like to keep that in his record. I could also see a use for it if a student is acting out of character. Nothing the students could see, just a personal log.

jmw: Currently the teacher can put private notes on a particular assignment, but it would be great if they could general private notes somewhere in the system, perhaps attached to the People screen.

If this ability already exists, please let us know.  We're all still learning.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Great ideas, Jeremy and Kelly. We are making an improved messaging tool that will allow a user to view previously sent messages.

We anticipate, no guarantees, that a future student report tool will show all interactions between a student and a teacher. This would also include any parent interactions of the said student.

I'm not sure that's exactly what Kelly is asking for, Brad.  I think he would like something more like a space to store instructor's private notes about a student in space.  Think about it like a note that you might put in a file folder in your drawer that documented that the student was caught cheating once already and had been warned verbally.  You would like that note associated with the student, but not viewable by anyone other than the instructor.  Does that help clarify?

In addition to what I previously mentioned, we also have a "my notes" feature request to add notes to an individual or tag individuals. Each note would be private.

Question for you, would these notes need to be private to only the creator, or other graders/system admins? What are your thoughts?

That sounds fabulous.

I think they would be visible to anyone else who had teacher/admin rights to that course, but perhaps not edit rights if they weren't the one who created the note.  That sound reasonable/doable?

Thanks.

Thanks for your feedback. I'll relay it to the rest of my team and it will be evaluated.

YES, PLEASE!  I would really like a private notes section where I can document things like student behavior, what emails I have sent them,  any special circumstances they have, or documenting phone calls to parents.  This would be so helpful!  Is it available yet??

This is not available as a standalone feature yet, but a potential workaround is outlined in this article: Use Buzz to keep notes about students

Thank you for the response...  I have done this in the past In BH using one assignment as the place I always leave private student notes at the bottom of the assignment.  However, I do find that the new Buzz private teacher notes feel even more cumbersome to get to...and I cannot see if there is anything written there until I click into it.

I personally would classify adding an easy to use "private student notes" section, available directly off the student list of names, as a top priority.  It would improve my ability to personally track and know my students...and understand current issues they are dealing with.
