Khan Academy in Buzz

In Buzz, I have been able to find Khan Academy Resources (by linking to Khan Academy activities through the Buzz Digital Library). I have also bee able to use the course editor to make the Khan Academy activities gradable activities in my course. However, I cannot seem to find any documentation that shows me how to view student progress in those linked activities, from Buzz. Is there a way to get Buzz to automatically pull the results from those Khan Academy linked activities into the Buzz gradebook?

Or, do I have to create a class at Khan Academy, enroll my students in that class, and then monitor their results in Khan Academy and manually enter their results into the Buzz gradebook?

Correct to your first question. In your case, sounds as if you would have to add the resource in the Khan Academy dashboard and in Buzz. Then, when the students completed the activities in Buzz, they would have to be logged in to Khan for it to recorded against their Khan user, allowing you to review the results in Khan.

Your steps sound correct. Since you are already using Khan Academy, it may be faster for you to just copy the URL of the activity from the Khan Academy website and then create a Custom Activity in Buzz. You then would just need to paste the URL to the activity into the Buzz Custom Activity and define the gradebook settings.

I think that may be faster for you because you have already found the activity on the Khan Academy website. It would reduce you having to search for it again in Buzz.

Does this make sense?

I don't believe Buzz and Khan Academy link like that. It would be a great feature request. There are several programs that our school uses. It would be great if they all communicated in this way.

The best option may be to create the course in Khan Academy, exporting the scores from Khan Academy and importing them into Buzz regularly.

This would be a fantastic addition to Buzz.

Hey everyone, just wanted to provide some initial feedback from Agilix. We currently do not have an "LTI" connection with Khan for two main reasons:

  1. Khan Academy does not provide an LTI tool to communicate with any LMS.
Khan does not provide this as an option. Some other LMSs have created their own middleware to communicate with Khan, similar to how we have. We allow for searching and embedding, as Khan allows. However, there is no way to have Khan communicate to an LMS that a student has completed an activity or what score they achieved.

  2. The LMS (LTI tool consumer) shares user information with the LTI tool provider.
Buzz does not natively/automatically provide any LTI tool to our schools and customers because there has been no approval for user information to be shared with the LTI tool provider. So, for example, if we were connect with Khan Academy via LTI and offered that as a core service, then every time a teacher or student accessed their Khan Academy resources the user's information (name, email, course, etc.) would be shared with Khan Academy. Often, schools/districts have to enter into a contract with the LTI tool provider before doing this.

If Agilix were to ever provide an LTI tool out-of-the-box, there would have to be a separate approval process in which the school/customer could enable it. As of now, since we do not send user information to Khan Academy, the tool is made available to anyone and everyone.

I hope this helps you understand. If Khan Academy were to provide an LTI option, I'm sure we would seek to add it as an option for a school/customer in which they could approve and enable it for their users.

Thank you for your feedback!

Brad,

Thank you for the feedback. Based upon your feedback, it sounds like adding Khan Academy resources to a Buzz course will not create assignments in the Khan Academy dashboard for students (since there is now way to link a Buzz course with a coach's class), correct?

Just to clarify, if we would like to have a course that uses Khan Academy resources and activities as graded activities, then teachers would need to do the following:

  1. Use the digital library to find and embed Khan Academy resources
  2. Use the LMS Editor settings to make the activities gradeable
  3. Set up a weight and value for each activity
  4. Hand enter a grade for the activity based upon viewing the student progress in the Khan Academy dashboard

Is that correct?

Brad,

Thanks. Yes, this answers my current questions.

If I continue to follow this thread, will you update it if Khan Academy very provides an LTI option?

Is it still the case that Khan Academy does not provide an LTI tool?

Hi Eldon,

Yes, this does appear to still be the case. However, you are welcomed to share your feedback and request creating LTI support to an LMS through the Khan Academy Community forum.
