Create badges

Badges can be awarded to recognize and encourage students, and they are rapidly becoming the standard in competency-based learning for recognizing and tracking mastery.

Buzz allows for two types of badges:

  • Automatic badges are configured to be automatically awarded to students by Buzz when they complete an activity, unit, or course.
  • Teacher-assigned badges are configured to be assigned by teachers to reward a specific achievement or behavior. Teachers can choose from badges in specific categories (e.g., leadership, scholarship, service, etc.) and provide personalized comments and/or evidence, so students know why they're being recognized.

To create both types of Badges:

  1. Open the vertical menu in the toolbar of Domain Details.
  2. Select Domain Settings.
  1. Click Add on the Badges card (click on existing badges to edit them).
  1. Provide:
    • The badge Name (required; 128 character limit).
    • A badge Image.
      • Required file type: PNG
      • Ideal size: 90x90
    • A Description of what the badge represents (required; 128 character limit).
    • The Requirements for earning the badge.
    • The Issuer Name, Organization, and Contact E-mail Address.
  2. Save badge.

Personalize badges with replacement variables

Buzz allows you to set up automated personalization for badges. To do so, insert any of the variables listed in the table below into text fields where you want the content customized for the user. At the time of giving the award, Buzz replaces the variables by drawing the content described in the table from the domain or course.

For example, text in an automatic badge's Requirements field reading "To earn this badge, students must complete the {{ITEMTITLE}} Activity.", would read "To earn this badge, students must complete the Diorama Activity." when awarded for completing a folder named "Diorama."

Keep in mind that the Name and Description fields have a 128 character limit; if the replacement variable data that is pulled in causes either field to exceed that limit, the text will be truncated.
