How do I use the Activity Grader?

The Activity Grader allows you to access and edit all student scores for a specific activity using one screen.

Open the Activity Grader by opening the Gradebook tool and clicking an activity header in Grades.

The Activity Grader has two tabs:

  • The Analytics tab outlines Frequency of Scores, Statistics, and Frequency of Grades. For assessments, you can also review question details and exclude questions from scoring.
  • The Activity Grader tab is a table listing each student and their submission data for the selected activity. This tab is outlined below.

From this screen, you can:

  1. Use Display Options (gear icon) to control the data displayed on the screen.
  2. Click Enable quick-edit grading (lightning icon) to make the Score column editable; you can:
    • Move through the fields using your keyboard arrows and enter grades.
    • Click Save to save changes without submitting (a pushpin icon appears in the Status column).
    • Submit All Scores to save and submit all (including previously saved scores).  
  3. Open the Tools menu (wrench icon) to:
    • Return all scores and feedback that you have entered and saved, but not submitted to students.
    • Stop accepting submissions for this activity.
    • Curve scores (where available) by specifying a lower possible maximum score.
    • Batch update scores; options include:
      • Auto-fill scores, meaning you can choose to assign the same score to a group of students for the selected activity; grouping options include unscored, unsubmitted, submitted and unscored, all, or selected (only appears when student checkboxes are selected). Choose the group, enter the grade, indicate whether you want to Return scores to students, and click OK.
      • Allow Retry for a group of student submissions based on whether they have been submitted, submitted and scored, submitted and unscored, or selected (only appears when student checkboxes are selected). Specify the group you want and click OK.
      • Excuse a group of students from the selected activity; grouping options include unsubmitted, submitted, all, or selected (only appears when student checkboxes are selected). Specify the group you want and click OK.
    • Go to Editor to make changes to the selected activity.
  4. Filter the results by group.
  5. Add students to the Clipboard.
  6. Click a student name to open the student screen for detailed content regarding that student's submission.

The Activity Grader student screen has two panels that display information about the selected student (see list below). You can use the arrows and student names in the toolbar to jump to the student before or after the selected student.

  1. The left panel displays information about the activity for the selected student regarding the activity:
    • Click the activity title under the student's name to preview the activity without leaving the grader.
    • Content displays the completed activity if available. Where applicable, you can adjust scores on individual questions or grading rubric criteria.
    • Score/Activity History tracks all activity attempts, time spent, and scores beginning with the first attempt.
    • Submission History displays the most recent grade submission and the date it was completed.
    • Analytics summarizes how the student is performing in comparison to the rest of the class.
    • Objectives (only appears for assessments) displays the objectives aligned with the assessment and the student's performance on each.
  2. The right panel allows you to edit the following components of the grade:
    • Points earned. This number is automatically calculated when possible; if you change it, you can click Revert to Calculated to reset the score.
    • Full Credit automatically assigns full points, No Credit assigns zero points, and Clear removes all points.
    • Save Draft allows you to save the data you’ve entered without submitting the score, so you can return and edit later.
    • Submit Score saves the grade to the Gradebook where the student can see it.
    • Excuse removes any requirement for the student to complete the activity; excusing a student from an activity saves an X to the Gradebook for that activity and doesn’t count it when calculating the student’s score. Once selected, Excuse reads Un-excuse; click it to undo the excuse.
    • Allow Retry does just that; the student can see that a retry has been permitted, but you may want to send them a message to notify them. Once selected, Allow Retry reads Un-allow Retry; click it to undo the allowance.
    • If you’ve designed the activity to require students to successfully complete it before they can continue to other activities, you can use Override Complete to remove that requirement for the student. Once selected, Override Complete reads Un-complete; click it to undo the override.
    • You can edit the Feedback and Private Note fields in the same way, but notice that the Feedback is visible to the student and the Private Note is just for you.
    • A Returned Attachments field appears between the Feedback and Private Note fields if the activity allows student dropbox submissions (available for Assignment and Custom activity types). Use this field to return attachments and feedback.

Jump between Derivative sibling courses

When you're using the Activity Grader in a course that has a Derivative sibling, a button appears in your toolbar that allows you to quickly jump between the sibling courses. This allows you to grade the same activity for students enrolled in each course without exiting the course.


  • Buzz previews submissions under the Content tab in the formats listed here. Because the preview function depends on third party tools, support for the listed file types may change or vary depending upon changes made by the preview tool provider:
    • Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides)
    • Microsoft Office (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx)
    • PDFs (.pdf)
    • Images (.gif, .jpg, .jpeg, ,png, .svg)
    • And more (.3gpp, .avi, .bmp, .eps, .mov, .mpeg4, .mpegps, .mts, .ps, .py, .tiff, .txt, .xml)

It appears that when you update a grade in the gradebook, the total grade does not update until you refresh the entire browser.  This is not the case in BrainHoney and will be a pain point for our teachers.  Can you comment on this or fix this?  Thanks

The teacher feedback templates also don't appear to be organized in Buzz as they were in BrainHoney.  Our teachers LOVED the teacher feedback templates and the fact that they are organized alphabetically...in buzz it doesn't appear that these templates are organized.  When you are teaching multiple sections in Agilix, teachers need to be able to locate their teacher feedback effectively.  Please fix...thanks.

The activity grader does not seem to work for entering scores. I select GRADE, enter a score and then select SUBMIT ALL SCORES and nothing happens. The button is active, but when it is pressed nothing changes.

I was unable to reproduce any problems using the Activity Grader. If you are still experiencing problems with it please contact your authorized support rep to create a ticket for Agilix support agents to investigate further.

I am finding in one of my courses that we no longer have the option to "Allow Retry" on assignments. The "Allow Retry" button is grayed out. Is there a setting that I am missing? Thank you!

Hello Cheree!

The Allow Retry button will become available after a student has made a submission or an assessment was scored by the teacher.

Is there a way to print all student grades for one or more particular assignments? For example, all of the grades in the above "Mathematical Language" assignment?

Hey @Michelle, you can export the grades (for one or more) assignments. See How do I export scores? By exporting, you can then adjust/manipulate the data in your preferred spreadsheet software (Excel, Sheets, etc.) and then print.
